An interview with a reporter
shouldn’t be risky business.
Most executives tend to regard an interview as a conversation. While an interview may seem like a conversation, treating it that way will often get your organization in trouble. Success in media interviews requires:
- Careful preparation
- The discipline to stay on message
- Strong performance techniques that build individual confidence
- Knowledge of how the media works and reporters think
Rockford Gray dramatically reduces the risk of talking to the media through our custom tailored approach. Our sessions can be structured in many ways, including:
- One-on-one coaching
- Small group workshops
- Large group seminars
With more than 20 years of Media Training experience, we have a proven program that gives spokespeople real-world tools for successful interviews.
We devote time and attention to researching the specific issues that the media will likely pursue. The training sessions typically contain three phases:
- Rockford Gray’s Bootcamp experience puts participants on solid ground in preparing for interviews. Bootcamp focuses on the rules of engagement with the media.
- Creation of messaging that is meaningful to the end audience. This exercise results in powerful quotes and soundbites that actually make it into the story.
- We undertake role-playing scenarios that are topical and relevant to the individual participant. Role-playing segments are video-taped and then reviewed.
We offer more than constructive criticism. We work with our participants to formulate appropriate responses that satisfy reporters . . . build the spokesperson’s confidence and . . . most importantly, advance your organization’s public relations goals.
